IVETTE.
A feminine diminutive form of Ives
(q.v.), a name of Teutonic origin, derived from iv ("yew"),
rendered "bowman," or "archer," because the weapon was made from yew wood.
Also spelled Yvette.
Usage: America, England, Panama, Puerto Rico, Spain.
Over the
altar of the village church was a picture—it was four generations
old. The lady of the grey manor overlooking the sea-cliff had
served the painter for his Madonna. Ivette had her
amber-tinted hair, the same oval face with the slightly squared
chin. That white woman of long ago had been very beautiful, more
beautiful than it is well for a woman to be. My lord had called
her Black Snow, she was so cold and still and evil. (Nets for the
Wind, Taylor, 1896)
