Slavic. A form of Greek Elias
(q.v.), meaning "my
god (is) Jehovah." Usage: Bulgaria (Илия),
Israel (איליה),
Russia (Илья). Also spelled
Ilija, and Iliya.
On the 14th
January, 1906, during the night, a Greek band of ten men crept into the
forest of Shikia, caza of Cassandra, and reached a
charcoal-burner's cabin inhabited by two Bulgarians of Monastir and by
five others of the village of Tarlis, caza of Nevrocop—Gheorghi
Simeonoff, Kostadin Filipoff, Ilia Angheloff, Dimitri Mangaroff, and
Simeon Shapnoff. These unfortunates were preparing to being work,
when the bandits opened a murderous fire on them. The first five
fell dead on the ground; the other two were severely wounded... (Macedonia
