| IMANUENTIUS. The
name of a British king in Caesar's Commentaries, Gaulish Wars, v,
c. 20. He is there described in a way which shows him to have been
the Llud of the ancient British Chronicles. The name is to be
explained, Y-man-dw-eng, with the Latin termination us
subjoined: i.e., "the dread (tutelary) divinity of the country";
the British king, in this case, taking the appellation of a divinity
generally, and not the name of any one in particular. Man, in
ancient British language, signified "country"; and dw,
"a divinity." Eng, in composition, implies
intenseness, from engir (Richards, "dire," Welsh). (Celtic Inscriptions on Gaulish & British Coins,
Poste, 1861)
