IMRAN (عمران). An
Arabic form of biblical Amram
(q.v.), meaning "of kin to the exalted one."
Chap. III.—Entitled the
family of Imran, a name given to the father of the Virgin Mary,
the Arabic form of Amram, or Amran; the father of Moses and Aaron.
Some think that Mahomet preserved alive the Miriam of Aaron's family
till the time of Christ, that she might become his mother. (The Life
of Mahomet, Green, 1877)
... God hath surely chosen
Adam, and Noah, and the family of Abraham, and the family of Imran
above the rest of the world; a race descending the one from the other:
God is he who heareth and knoweth. Remember when the wife of Imran
said, Lord, verily I have vowed unto thee that which is in my womb, to
be dedicated to thy service... (Sacred Books of the East, Horne,
1917)
