IRA (עִירָא).  Biblical.  [Hebrew = "a town" (Gesenius); "watchful" (Oxford Bible)].

    (1) A Jairite who was "a chief ruler about David" (2 Sam. xx. 26).
    (2) One of David's mighty men, the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite (2 Sam. xxiii. 26; 1 Chron. xi. 28).
    (3) An Ithrite, one of David's mighty men (2 Sam. xxiii. 38; 1 Chron. xi. 40). (The Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894)
