Biblical. Hebrew Yishmael
(q.v.), meaning "God will hear," from shama (to hear) and
El (God).

the eldest son of Abraham
(Gen. xvi. 1-16; xvii. 23-27; xxi. 3-21; xxv. 9, 12-18; xxviii. 9; xxxvi.
10; xxxvii. 25-28, 36).
(2) the third son of Azel, a descendant of
Jonathan (1 Chron. viii. 38; ix. 44).
(3) the father of Zebadiah, "ruler of the
house of Judah" in Jehoshaphat's reign (2 Chron. xix. 11)
(4) a son of Jehohanan. He took part in
the successful conspiracy against Athaliah (2 Chron. xxiii. 1).
(5) a son of Nethaniah, who belonged to the
seed royal of Judah. (2 Kings xxv. 25; Jer. xi. 7-16; xli. 1-18).
(6) a son of Pashhur. He was induced by
