IVAILO (Ивайло).
Bulgarian name. Perhaps meaning "archer," from Ива,
meaning "edge," or Russian Ива
"willow." Cf.
Old Norse Ivhar, from Teutonic
iv
("yew"), which is usually rendered "archer," from the weapon
made from yew wood. Also spelled Ivaylo.
1278 Maria
marries Ivailo. Emperor Michael brings forward another pretender
to the throne, whom he marries to his daughter Irene.
1279 The report of Ivailo's death is spread and the
people accept Michael's nominee, Ivan Asen III, as thei czar, but he
cannot maintain his place. Ivailo suddenly reappears.
1280 He defeats two armies which Michael sends
against him. Ivan Asen III flees, and George Terterij I is crowned
czar. Ivailo goes to Nogaj, khan of the Tartars, to ask for aid
against the new czar and there loses his life. (The Historians'
History of the World, H.S. Williams, v.24, 1907)
