In Chretien's Iwain (Le Chevalier au lion), the poet tells how one day, at Arthur's court, the knight Calogrenanz was relating his experience in the forest near an enchanted fountain, and bewailing his overthrow by a giant of most hideous aspect, armed with a mace.  Among the listeners was Iwain.  Stirred up by his friend's recital he resolves to avenge him,...
