Meaning of the baby name JARNWIDR.

JARNWIDR.  Old Norse name meaning "ironwood."  Also see Járnviðr, and Járnvidja.

JARNWIDR.  In Scandinavian mythology the giantess who was the mother of the two wolves, Sköll and Hati, which attack the sun and moon. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).

An explanation of the cause of eclipses of the sun and moon was obtained by supposing two wolves to be constantly in pursuit of both luminaries.  The wolf which pursued the sun was called Sköll, and that which pursued the moon Hati, a son of Hrodwitner.  The mother of both wolves was an aged giantess, who lived in the wood called Jarnwidr, east of the citadel of Midgard. (Manual of Mythology, Murray, 1873).
