JOHANNA. The
feminine form of Latin Johannes
(q.v.), meaning "Jehovah's gift (or grace)." Also see Joanna. Usage:
America, England, Estonia, Germany, Holland, Ireland. (History of
Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
Johanna is,
of course, the feminine of Johannes,
of which John is our English contraction...
Johanna, Jane,
or Jessie, then, are derived from the same root as Hannah or Anne,
namely the Hebrew word Chaanach, signifying "favour",
"mercy", "grace", which, combined with the
contraction of Jehovah, Iah or Jah, give Johanna = grace
of the Lord...
In Germany Johanna with its diminutive Hanne
is still the only form of the name, and very common,... (Girls'
Christian Names, Swan, 1905)
