JESUS.
Biblical. [Latin Jesu, Jesus; Greek Iesous,
from Hebrew Yehoshua
(Yeshua)
= "Joshua" =
"Jehovah (his) salvation" (Gesenius); "Jehovah (is)
salvation" (Oxford Bible), or "Jehovah Saviour"].
(1) Joshua,
the military leader in the wars of Canaan (Acts vii. 45—A.V.; Heb. iv.
8—A.V.). In both cases the R.V. judiciously inserts in the text
"Joshua."
(2) The son of Eliezer, and the father of Er, in the
ancestry of our Lord (Luke iii. 29—R.V.). The A.V. calls him
Jose.
(3) [Jesus Christ] (Matt. i. 25; iii. 13, etc.).
(4) A Jewish convert to Christianity, called also
Justus, associated with St. Paul (Col. iv. 11).
¶ The name seems to have been a common one among the
Jews of the Greek-speaking period. About twelve people who bore it
are mentioned by Josephus. (The Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual,
Hunter, 1894)
