Origin of the name JUDAS.
Etymology of the name JUDAS.
Meaning of the baby name JUDAS.

JUDAS.  Biblical.  [Lat. from Gr. Ioudas, from Heb. Yehudhah.], "praised."

     (1) Judah, the son of Jacob (Matt. i. 2, 3A.V.).
     (2) The son of a certain Joseph, and the father of Symeon, in the ancestroy of our Lord (Luke iii. 30R.V.).  The A.V. calls him Juda.
     (3) "Judas of Galilee," of whom Gamaliel thus spoke: "After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the enrolment, and drew away some of the people after him:  he also perished; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered abroad" (Acts v. 37R.V.).
     (4) Judas Iscariot.  The apostle who betrayed his Divine Lord, and that by a kiss.  He is distinguished from another Judas [No. 5] by being surnamed Iscariot (Matt. x. 4; Mark iii. 19; Luke vi. 16; John xiv. 22), by which is probably meant that he came originally from Kerioth in the south of Judah, towards the land of Edom (Josh. xv. 25.  If so, then Judas was from the province of Judæa, while the other eleven apostles seem to have been from Galilee.
     (5) One of the twelve apostles.  According to the text of the R.V. he was the son, and according to the A.V. and the margin of the R.V. the brother, of James (Luke vi. 16; Acts i. 13R.V.).  He is the Thaddæus of Matt. x. 3 and Mark iii. 18, and also the Lebbæus of Matt. x. 3; but the R.V. omits the latter name.
     (6) (?) Either the youngest or the third of the four "brethren of the Lord" (Matt. xiii. 55; Mark vi. 3R.V.).  He may have been the same as No. 5, and as the apostle Jude, though some make the two different men. [Juda.]
     (7) A man who lived at Damascus, in the street called "Straight", and with whom Paul lodged just after his conversion (Acts ix. 11).
     (8) Judas surnamed Barsabbas or Barsabas.  He was a leading man in the church of Antioch, and was chosen with Silas to accompany Barnabas and Saul (Paul) on a visit to the churches of Syria and Cilicia.  He had prophetic gifts.  His future history is unknown (Acts xv. 22, 27, 32).
