KATARINA.  A northern form of Greek Kathariné (q.v.), meaning "pure."  Usage: Czech Republic & Slovakia (Katarína), Germany, Hungary, Illyria, Russia (Катарина), Slovenia (Катарина), Sweden. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)

    Bridget, Saint (Birgitta Persson), abt. 1302-73; Swedish mystic and religious reformer; b. Finsted; at fourteen married a nobleman; on his death entered a convent; lived in Rome, 1350-73, exerting great influence by means of "revelations" received in trances; attacked the corruption of the Church; founded the Order of the Holy Savior or Birgittine Order, established at Vadstena, Sweden, her daughter Katarina (St. Catherine) being the first abbess; was reinterred at Vadstena, 1374; canonized 1381; committed to paper her "revelations," many times printed.
