KYNTHIA (Κυνθἰα). Feminine
form of Kynthios,
meaning "of Cynthus." A surname of Diana, Goddess of the
Moon, from her birthplace, mount Kynthos, on the island of Delos.
Perhaps from kyon (genit. kynos, "dog").
Travellers have described Kynthos as "an ugly hill."
CYNTHIA
(Lat., from Gk. Κυνθἰα,
Kynthia). A surname of Diana (q.v.), from her birthplace,
Mount Cynthus, on the island of Delos; and hence a poetic term for the
moon. Queen Elizabeth is referred to under this name in Spenser's Colin
Clout's Come Home Again, in Fletcher's Purple Island, and in
Raleigh's poem "Cynthia." (The New International
Encyclopaedia, Colby, v.6, 1918).
