KARNIG (Գառնիկ).
Armenian name, derived from the diminutive form of գառին
"lamb," hence "little lamb." (A Dictionary, English
and Armenian, Aukerian, v.2, 1825)
... in the year 331, St.
Gregory withdrew himself from all entercourse with men, and retiring
into Upper Armenia, took up his abode in a cavern in Mount Sebuh.
Here he lived, more like an heavenly spirit than a creature of Earth,
until his departure from this life to inherit the reward of the
righteous. He superintended the Armenian Church during a period of
thirty years.
His body was found by some shepherds, who buried it
in the same spot raising thereon a heap of stones. There it lay
unknown for a few years, when it was discovered by a hermit named Karnig,
who, it is said, was directed to the spot by divine revelation... (Armenia
and the Armenians, Isavertenc, 1877)
