KEVORK (Գէորգ).
Armenian form of George
(q.v.), meaning "farmer,
husbandman." (History
of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
... The monastery of St. Mary
Peribleptos, at Psamatia, was built in 1301 by the Emperors Romanus III.
and Argyropulos. Until 1643 it was in possession of Greeks, but
during the reign of Ibrahim I. it is said that a corpulent young
Armenian girl was presented to the Sultan, who was very fond of fleshy
women, and through her influence this monastery was taken away from the
Greeks and given to the Armenians. In 1782 it was destroyed by
fire and it was rebuilt by the Armenians under the name of Surp Kevork
(St. George); it is also called Soulou Monstir on account of the
existing underground cistern... (The Ottoman Dynasty, Hidden,
1912)
