KINELÁDANOS (Κινηλάδανος). Greek
form of Kandalanu, the
name of the king of Babylonia from 648 B.C. to 627 B.C. He was also
king of Assyria under the name of Assurbanipal.
... Ashurbanipal, encouraged by
a favourable oracle from the moon-god, marched southward, blockaded
Sippar, Kutha, and Babylon, and drove the Chaldaeans into Elam.
The three cities were all stormed, and Shamash-shum-ukin set fire to his
palace and perished in the flames (648). Ashurbanipal then himself
"took the hands of Bel" and ascended the Babylonian throne
under the name of Kandalanu
(the "Kineladanos" of Berossos). (The Ancient
History of the Near East, Hall, 1913).
