Travellers in the Gold Coast district as well as readers of the literature dealing with that region can hardly fail to notice the continual recurrence in it of such names as Kwesi, Kwaku, Kudju, etc., or such combinations of names as Kwesi Akon, Koffi Mensa, Kudju Essien, etc.  The explanation of the prevalence of these names is quite simple, although rather curious.  Each child at its birth receives two names, the first of which indicates the day of the week on which it was born, while the second shows the order of its birth and its position in the family.
