LEILA (לַיְלָה).  Hebrew name of Arabic origin, meaning "dark Oriental beauty."

"Leila," said the Hebrew, when left alone with his daughter, "think not that it is for mine own safety that I stoop to this flight from thee..." (Leila, Lytton, 1853)

LEILA (ليلى, لیلا).  Arabic name meaning "night." Said to sometimes be given to children born during the night. 

    "The name is not heathenish, it is Arabic," said Leila, solemnly.
    "Oh, Arabic is very heathenish; but the name is pretty, and it means "Night," which is associated with enjoyment to the natives of hot countries..." (Golden Hours Whitfield Magazine, Wray, Jan. 1883)

Jami (or Djami), Mulla Nur-ed-din Abd-ar-Rahman-ben-Ahmed, a celebrated Persian poet, born 1414, died 1492, wrote the romantic poetic fiction Mejnoun and Leila. (Popular Encyclopedia; or, Conversations Lexicon, Annandale, v.7, 1883)
