LELI.
A Swiss pet form of biblical Magdalene
(q.v.), meaning "of Magdala." (History of Christian Names,
Yonge, 1884)
Prefixion of N, T, &c., to
Certain Names (5th S. iii. 301, 413.)—Dr. Chance says:—"In the
Spanish Lola (= Charlotte) and Leli (Swiss = Magdalene) the second
syllable seems to be the reduplication." Surely Leli is the
South German and Swiss diminutive of Magdalene, the syllable li
corresponding to the German lein in Fräulein. In the Swiss
patois we have Schlöszli, Schänzli, and many other words with the same
termination li; in fact, it seems to me that about one-third of their
substantives end in li. I conceive also that, in the
word Lola, la is not a reduplication, but merely a sign of diminution,
as it is in Latin and Italian. F. J. V. (Notes and Queries, v.52,
1875)
