LIDIYA (Ли́дия).
Bulgarian and Russian form of Greek Lydia
(q.v.), meaning "woman of Lydia."
"Well,
my dear, have you taken the olive-branch to them?" asked Countess
Lídiya Ivánovna, before she had fully entered the room.
"That is all over; it was by no means so
important as we all thought," replied Anna. "My belle
sur is, in general, too quick."
But Countess
Lídiya Ivánovna, who was interested in everything that did
not concern her, was in the habit of not listening to what interested
her; she interrupted Anna:
"Yes, there is much evil and sorrow in the
world, and I am so worn out to-day!" (Anna Karénin, Tolstoy-Wiener,
v.2, 1904)
