LINA (लीना).  Hindi name, said to mean "absorbed in; merged," probably from the Sanskrit word līná ("cling to"). (A Sanskrit Reader: Text and Vocabulary, Lanman, 1884).

LINA.  Originally a short form of Carolina ("manly").  In Northern England, it is a form of Ellen (q.v.), meaning "light." (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).  Usage: America, England.
