LINDA. If from Spanish lindo/linda, this name means "pretty"; if
Germanic, it means "serpent."
Usage: America, England, Estonia, Finland, Holland, Ireland, Russia (Линда),
Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland.
Lind
is another term for a serpent. The German dragons are always
called lindwurmer, and the word is, in fact, the same as that
which we still use as lithe, expressing supple grace; the
adjective linths becoming, on the one side lind, on the
other lithe. The Spaniards use lindo, linda, for
pretty, with about the same difference of sense, in the masculine or
feminine, as we do when we speak of a pretty woman, or a pretty man. (History
of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
