LUCY. English
form of Latin Lucia (q.v.), meaning "light."
Usage:
America, England.
The name of Lucy is derived from the Latin word lux [genitive lucis]
= light—the masculine form of Lucius,
meaning "one born at day-light."
After the advent of Christianity, it again came into
fashion, owing chiefly to the popularity of a virgin martyr of the name,
the patron Saint of the Italian fishermen, who called their daughters
after her. To Saint Lucy, too, those afflicted with blindness
appealed for aid, owing to some confusion in their minds between the
meaning of her name, her supposed power to confer benefits, and their
own misfortunes. (Girls' Christian Names, Swan, 1905).
