LYONÉS. Arthurian.
A variant form of Lyonesse
(q.v.), meaning "land
of the lioness." This is the name of a daughter of Sir Persaunt, and wife to Sir
Gareth. She is wrongly called Lyonors
(a different person) by Tennyson.
"Ah!" said Sir Persaunt, "there is the Red Knight of the
Red Lands, who is the most perilous knight that I know, and a man that
is without mercy, and it is said that he hath seven men's
strength. He doth great wrong to the lady, and that is a pity, for
she is one of the fairest in the world. If thou art her sister, is
not thy name Lynette?"
"Yes," she said, "and my sister's name
is Dame Lyones. And now, my lord," she continued, "I
require of ye that ye will make this gentleman a knight or ever he fight
with the Red Knight." To which Sir Persaunt replied, "I
will with all my heart, if it please him to take the order of knighthood
from so simple a man as I am." (The Story of King Arthur,
Brooks-Malory, 1915)
