Origin of the name LEON.
Etymology of the name LEON.
Meaning of the baby name LEON.

LEON.  Latin.  Greek Λέων.  French Léon.  From the oblique case of Latin Leo (q.v.), meaning "a lion."

Leon, or Leo, was early a favourite name among the Greeks; and Herodotus thinks, on account of its meaning, that the captive Leo was the first victim of the Persians.  It passed on in unceasing succession through Greeks of all ranks till it came to Byzantine emperors and Roman bishops.  Léon has continued in use in France. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
