| LINCOLN. The
Roman Lindum, which is probably from lindon, the prehistoric
form of the Welsh llyn, but often supposed to be the British name Llyndun,
the "dun" or "hill fort" at the pool. Lincoln is
usually explained as a corruption of Lindum Colonia, supposed to
have been the name of the Roman colony on the hill where the minster now
stands. But there is no evidence except that of the Ravenna
Geographer to show that Lindum was a colonia. The modern name
may be traced to the Lindocolina of Bæda, and the Lindkylne and
Lincolle of the Saxon Chronicle. Lincoln is the name of no less
than 1600 places in the United States, which were named after Abraham
Lincoln, President from 1860 to 1865. Port Lincoln, in Spencer Gulf,
South Australia, was named by Flinders in 1802 after his native county. (Names and Their Histories,
Taylor, 1896).
