LORN, a district in the
north-west of Argyll, bordering the Firth of Lorn, gives a second title
to the Duke of Argyll. The modern spelling Lorne is wrong.
It was the territory of the Cinel Loarn, or "race of Loarn,"
one of the three branches of the Dalriad Scots; Loarn Mor, the
"great fox," being one of the three brothers who in the fifth
century are said to have led the colony of the Scots from Ireland to
Argyll. (Names and Their Histories, Taylor, 1896)
