Meaning of the baby name LUKE.

LUKE.  Biblical.  A contracted form of Latin Lucas.  [N.T. Greek Loukas, from Latin Lucanus = "of Lucania," a province in Italy.  Lucus = "a sacred wood," "a grove."]. (The Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894)

St. Luke, patron saint of painters and physicians.  Tradition says he painted a portrait of the Virgin Mary.  From Col. iv. 14 he is supposed to have been a physician.  In art he is usually represented with an ox lying near him, and generally with painting materials.  Sometimes he seems engaged painting a picture of the Virgin and infant Savior, his descriptions of the early life of the Savior being more minute than that of the other evangelists... (Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, Brewer, 1900)
