LYUBEN (Любен).
Bulgarian name derived from the word lyub, meaning "love."
... In those days another and
very different Treaty of Bucarest was concluded between Prince Michael and
the Bulgarian emigrants at Bucarest on January 14th, 1867. According
to this treaty Prince Michael was to rule over both Serbs and Bulgars,
with identical laws for both nations, these laws to be proclaimed in
"both dialects."
This current of opinion did not cease altogether even
after the establishment of the Exarchate. In some quarters it still
persisted in 1873, when the well-known Bulgarian leader, Lyuben Karavelov,
wrote as follows in the Bulgarian newspaper "Nezavisimost"
("Indépendence"), then published in Bucarest: "The
Tchecs, Moravians, Slovaks, Ruthenes, and Poles ought to form one
political unit, the Serbs and Bulgars ought to form a second, and the
Russians a third." Karavelov omitted to expressly mention the
Croats and Slovenes, including them with Serbs as a matter of course... (The Aspirations of
Bulgaria, Protić, 1915)
