MACHTELD.  A Dutch form of German Mahthild (q.v.), meaning "courageous maiden," from moedige "courageous" and hilde "maiden."  Also spelled Mechteld. (Navorscher, Leendertz, v.4, 1854).  Usage: Germany, Holland.
