| MĀIA.
Roman name, also called Bona Dea, wife of Vulcan, a
beneficent goddess of the field, to whose quickening influence the
starting of vegetation in the spring was ascribed. From her the
month of May takes its name. In later times she was sometimes
confused with the Greek Maia (see below), Atlas's daughter, mother
of Hermes. (An Outline of Greek and Roman Mythology, Kelsey,
1889). Probably related to the Bulgarian Maya
("leaven").
MAIA (Μαία).
Greek name meaning "nursing mother." In mythology,
this is the name of the eldest of the Pleiades and mother of Hermes by
Zeus.
Also see Maya, and Mya.
Maia, in
Greek mythology, the eldest of the Pleiades, the seven daughters of
Atlas and the Oceanid Pleione. She and her sisters, born on Mt.
Cyllene in Arcadia, are sometimes called mountain goddesses. In a
cave of Cyllene Maia became by Zeus the mother of the god Hermes.
The story is told in the Hymn to Hermes attributed to
Homer. She was identified by the Romans with Maia Majesta, an old
Italian goddess of spring, to whom a sacrifice was offered on the 1st of
May by the priest of Vulcan (see above). (Encyclopedia Britannica, Chisholm, v.17, 1911)
