MAKEDA (מַקֵּדָה).
From the biblical Canaanite town Makkedah, meaning
"a place of shepherds." The queen of Sheba was known to the Ethiopian people by
the name Makeda. (The New International Encyclopaedia, Gilman,
v.15, 1904).
Makeda Silvera is a Caribbean Canadian novelist and
short story writer. (Wiki)
A Canaanite
town to which Joshua pursued the five kings who had confederated to
attack Gibeon (Josh. x. 10). After this defeat, they took refuge
in a cave at Makkedah, but were brought out and hanged on five trees
(16-27). Before that day was ended, Joshua had taken Makkedah
itself, and killed the king (28-30; cf. xii. 16). The town, which
was in the lowland of Southern Palestine, was assigned to Judah (xv.
41). Various conjectures have been made as to its site. At
the suggestion of Sir Charles Warren, it has been placed on the survey
map doubtfully at el Mughar, in the Philistine country, 3 miles
south-west of Ekron, 18-1/2 north-east of Ashkelon, and 7 in a direct
line from the Mediterranean. Various other sites had previously
been proposed. (The Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter,
1894).
