MAWDWEN.  A variant form of Cornish Modwen (q.v.), probably meaning "mannerly woman," from Celtic modh "manners" and wen, the poetical form of "a woman" or "fair one."  This was the name of one of St. Patrick's Irish nuns, known in her own country as Monynna.  Also see Modwenna.
