MILDRYTH.
A contracted form of Anglo-Saxon Mildthryth
(q.v.), meaning "mild threatener," from Old English milde
"gentle, mild" and þryð "threat."
Modern English Mildred.
The Ang.-Sax.
milde, mild, gentle, entered into several names of women, as
Mildryth, daughter of Merewald, king of the West Mercians. The
termination dryth is from the name of one of the Valkyrjur, p.
58, but it seems to have had in many cases the general sense of maid or
woman... (English Surnames and Their Place in the Teutonic Family,
Ferguson, 1858)
