MILDTHRYTH.
Anglo-Saxon name meaning "mild threatener," from Old English milde
"gentle, mild" and þryð "threat."
Modern English Mildred. (History
of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
... The meaning generally
attributed to Mildred is "one that is gentle of speech", but
this is not the true meaning, for though mild means mild in
Anglo-Saxon and German, red is always a masculine termination in
Anglo-Saxon names. Furthermore the original name was Mildthryth:
now thryth means commanding or threatening, so that the true meaning of
the name is "one who is gently or mildly strict". (Girls'
Christian Names, Swan, 1905).
... Mildgyth, Mildthryth (St.
Mildred), and Milburh (St. Milburga), were the three holy daughters of
Merewald, brother of Wulfhere, the first Christian King of Mercia, under
whom he was sub-king of the "West-Hecanas," or "Magesaetas,"
the people, namely, of Herefordshire and South Shropshire, as is shown
by the fact that in Merewald's day they received their first Bishop (Putta,
a refugee from Rochester, A.D. 676), and that the diocese of his
successors, the Bishops of Hereford, runs up to Wenlock Edge unto this
day... (Shropshire Folk-lore, Burne-Jackson, 1886)
