MIRÈIO.
French Provençal form of old Occitan Mirèlha
(q.v.), meaning "admirable." Modern French Mireille
(q.v.). Italian Mirella.
Mirčio is an old romantic poem by Frederi Mistral,
about the lovers Mirčio and
Vincen.
... The fact that Mistral's
poetry is written in Provencal must necessarily exclude most English
readers from reading him in the original; but even those who know no
language but their own have the opportunity of reading a translation of
"Mirèio,"
by Mr. H. Crichton, published by Kegan Paul; another in prose, by Mr. G.
H. Grant, issued at Avignon; and a third, in verse, published by Roberts
Bros., Boston, by Miss Harriet Waters Preston, who has made a special
study of the Troubadours, old and new, and of Mistral in particular... (Littell's
Living
Age, v.168, 1886)
