MIRYAM (מִרְיָם). Original
Hebrew form of biblical Miriam
(q.v.), probably meaning "bitter." (History of Christian Names, Yonge,
1884)
The Cradle of Jesus.
This is a subterranean Oratory near the Mart of Science. It is
said that Miryam, the mother of Jesus, prayed here. To pray
here with success one must recite the Surat Miryam, and pray like Omar,
who recited the Surat Sad at the Mihrab of David. They
recite also here the prayer of Jesus, when he was received into heaven
from the Mount of Olives. (The Holy City, Williams-Willis, 1849)
