| MURIEL. A
Scottish Anglicized form of Gaelic Muireal
(q.v.), meaning "little Mary," from a diminutive of Muire
(q.v.). Also spelled Meriel.
(Praenomina, Charnock, 1882).
MURIEL. Old
English name, meaning "perfumed," from Greek muron.
The
pretty old English name of Muriel, meaning perfumed, was originally
derived from the Greek muron, any sweet juice distilling from plants and
used for unguents or perfumes, muron itself being derived by the ancients
from muro = to flow or trickle, or, according to Athenaeus, from murra =
the oil of myrrh, though the word is probably of Oriental origin—perhaps
connected with the Hebrew môr. The word is not of uncommon occurrence in Greek literature, and even enters into a
proverbial saying, "Sweet oil on lentils", meaning "Pains
thrown away".
Met with in old English registers and amongst
our old song writers, it had practically sunk into disuse until quite
recent years; but is now surely and deservedly gaining popularity.
A fresh impetus was first given to Muriel probably by Miss Dinah
Mulock's (Mrs. Craik's) popular book, John Halifax, Gentleman—where
the little blind heroine has the name of Muriel, "Muriel—little
unconscious, cooing dove"!... "Yes, those pretty baby eyes
were dark—quite dark. There was nothing painful or unnatural in
their look, save, perhaps, the blankness of gaze which I have before
noticed... She never had seen—never would see—in this world"...
(Girls' Christian Names, Swan, 1905)
