MABONAGRAIN.
In the Arthurian romance Erec and Enidè, sir Mabonagrain is a nephew of
King Evrain. It is probably a contracted form of Mabon ab Grain,
"Mabon son of Graine."
In the
episode of La Joie de la Cour in Erec, the knight Mabonagrain
defeats many an opponent in the defence of his lady's mist-enclosed
garden; he dwells ever with his amie, and is not the recipient of
only her occasional favor... (Studies in the Fairy Mythology of
Arthurian Romance, Paton, 1903)
The knight
who guards the enchanted place in Erec is called Mabonagrain.
Paris has noted the fact that there are many compound Celtic names which
have Mabon for the
first part and a second name joined to the first by ab (= the son
of), and has suggested that this might be such a form as Mabon ab Grain
(?)... (Studies and Notes in Philology and Literature, v.4, 1895)
