MARVIN.
The same as Celtic Mervyn
(q.v.), meaning "sea hill." Usage: America, England.
Marvin Pentz Gaye, Jr. (d. 1984), was an American
musician, singer, and songwriter. Hank Brian Marvin, an English
guitarist. (Wiki)
Marvin, Mervin,
Mirfin, Mervyn, Murfin.—Bapt. "the son of Merfin" or
"Mervyn" (Yong, iii. 154-6). The Brittany form of this
famous name was Merlin.
Miss Yonge says Mervyn is still in use in Wales as a font-name.
The story of "Mervyn Clytheroe" has made the name familiar to
modern ears; cf. Dolphin, Turpin, or Halpin, the suffix in all three
cases being -fin. The Yorkshire form of the surname to-day
is Murfin or Mirfin, practically the same as Mirfyn in the 14th century.
