| MENDES.
A town in the Delta, Lower Egypt, now called Ashmoun, the seat of empire
of the XXIXth Egyptian dynasty. It was raised to the dignity of a
kingdom under the name of Bendidi during the Assyrian Icosarchy. It
was held by the Calasirian class of warriors. Here also was fought
the battle of Mendes between Nekhtarhebi of the XXXth dynasty, and
Artaxerxes II., his suzerain, king of Persia, whom he utterly defeated,
and together with his army, expelled from the Delta. It was sacred
to the worship of the ram Mendes.
