| MENES.
"The Stable," or "Firm." The first king of
Egypt, founder of the Egyptian empire and of the city of Memphis. He
was a great law-giver, embanked the river Nile, and excavated a
canal. He fought against the Libyans, and was devoured by a
crocodile while bathing in the Nile. Menes, or Mena,
a name which was also borne by a Coptic Christian long after the downfall
of the Egyptian empire.
