MENW.
Arthurian. From the Welsh vocabulary word menw, meaning
"seat of intellect; soul." (A Dictionary of the Welsh
Language, Pughe, 1832).
And Arthur called
Menw the son of Teirgwaedd, in order that if they went into a savage
country, he might cast a charm and an illusion over them, so that none
might see them whilst they could see every one...
... And Menw took the form of a bird; and he descended upon the top of
his lair, and strove to snatch away one of the precious things from him,
but he carried away nothing but one of his bristles. And the boar
rose up angrily and shook himself so that some of his venom fell upon
Menw, and he was never well from that day forward.—Kilhwch and Olwen. (Mabinogion,
Guest, 1910)
