MITHRA.
In Zendic mythology a son of Ahuramazda,
and consubstantial with him. He was the great mediator between the
gods and men. He was also the guardian of men during life, and their
judge after death. (Lenormant.) See Mithra-Daradj.
(An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876). The name means
"love" and "sun."
... As to the analogy
instituted by Herodotus between the Venus Urania, the Mylitta, and the
Mithra, I can only beg my readers to believe that it is one which
comparative archaeology fully corroborates: aye! and philology too, I
might add; for the Persian mihr, (a contraction for mithra)
means: "Mithra," "love," and "sun."... (The
Journal of
Classical and Sacred Philology, Lightfoot, 1854).
