MICAIAH (מִיכָיְהוּ). Biblical.
Unisex. Hebrew name meaning "who is like Jehovah."
Micaiah, Michaiah
[Heb. Mikhayah, Mikhayahu, Mikhayehu = "who
(is) like Jehovah?" [MICAH.]
Nos. 1 and 3 are of the second form, Nos. 4, 6, and 7 of the first form,
No. 5 of the third form, and No. 2 of the third and fourth forms].
(1) The daughter of Uriah of Gibeah. She
was the wife of Rehoboam, and the mother of king Abijah (2 Chron. xiii.
2). Called in xi. 20 Maalah the daughter of Absalom.
(2) A prophet, the son of Imlah. Being
desired by Ahab to concur in the favourable prediction given by the
prophets of Baal regarding Ahab's expedition against Ramoth-gilead, he
did what was required of him, but with such transparent insincerity that
he was adjured to speak the truth, on which, in the name of Jehovah, he
predicted the death of Ahab in the coming fight. The order was
given to make him a prisoner till the event should prove his
unfavourable vaticination untrue. When it was found correct, he
was probably released (1 Kings xxii. 8-28; 2 Chron. xviii. 6-27).
(3) One of Jehoshaphat's princes sent by him to
teach in the cities of Judah (2 Chron. xvii. 7).
(4) The father of a certain man Achbor in
Josiah's reign (2 Kings xxii. 12).
(5) A son of Gemariah, who communicated to the
Jewish princes in the reign of Jehoiakim the contents of Jeremiah's book
read by Baruch (Jer. xxxvi. 11, 13).
(6) A son of Zaccur, and a grandson of Asaph (Neh.
xii. 35).
(7) A priest, one of those who blew trumpets
when the wall of Jerusalem was dedicated by Nehemiah (Neh. xii. 41).
¶ The A.V. calls the prophet (see No. 2)
Micaiah and the other six men Michaiah. The R.V. names all the
seven people Micaiah. (The Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual,
Hunter, 1894)
