The younger
daughter of king Saul (1 Sam. xiv. 49). A mutual affection sprang
up between her and David, and after a time they were married (xviii. 27,
28). The wife aided her husband in escaping from her father's
machinations, but after the former became a fugitive Saul married her to
another man, regardless of the obligations she was under to David (xxv.
44). When Abner, Ishbosheth's general, sought to make matters up
with David, the king required that his wife Michal should be restored to
him, which was done (2 Sam. iii. 15). But she was not to him what
she had been in the days of her first love; and when David, in the
excess of his religious zeal, danced before the ark, Michal thought he
was acting in an undignified manner, and despised him in her
heart. David answered provokingly, and the two became permanently
alienated. After a time Michal died childless (2 Sam. vi. 14-23).
