NGO-KWANG (娥皇). Cantonese
and Vietnamese form of Chinese Ehuang
(q.v.), meaning "beauty-august."
Also
written Ngo-Hwang, and O-Huang. (A Tonic Dictionary of the Chinese Language in the Canton Dialect,
Williams, 1856; and, Railroad Gazette, v.41, 1906). In
mythology, this is the name of the sister of Nüying
and wife of the mystical ruler Shun.
... O Huang and her sister Nu
Ying were the wives of Shun, the "Perfect Emperor" (2317-2208
B.C.). When he died, and was buried near the Hsiang River, they
wept so copiously over his grave that their tears burned spots on the
bamboos growing there, and thus was the variety known as the
"spotted bamboo" created. Eventually the despairing
ladies committed suicide by throwing themselves into the river... (Fir-flower
Tablets, Ayscough-Lowell, 1921.
