NUBIT.  Egyptian name meaning "woman of Ombos," i.e. an Ethiopian woman.  It has the masculine Nubiti (q.v.).  Pollard explains that it is a form of Nubti-Ombos, in Upper Egypt.  He says the whole of the country south of Assouan was known in the earliest times as Cush, and appears under this name in Egyptian.  It was also known as Nehesti, "the land of the Negroes."  And the usual name in Scripture is "Ethiopia."
