| NABONAHID. "Nebo is Majestic." The son of a Chaldean
chief named Nabo-bal-atir-rib. He was raised to the throne of
Babylon by an insurrection of the great lords against Bellabarisruk, the
infant son of Nergalsarussur. He did little but repair a few temples
of the deities whose worship he declared himself to have neglected, and
had throughout his reign to contend with the encroachments of the
Persians. Towards the close of his reign he made his son Bel-sarra-uzur
joint king of Babylonia, and left him to sustain the defence of Babylon
against Cyrus, king of Persia. After the fall of the city he
tendered his submission to the victor, by whom he was sent into exile into
Carmania, where he died in obscurity after a troubled reign of seventeen
years, and with him perished the second empire of Babylonia. He was
the Labynetus
of the Greek historians. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876)
